Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims (SALAM) is seeking proactive and engaging Youth Mentors for our Afghan Youth Mentoring program. These roles work directly with newly arrived Afghan teens coaching them in strategies to thrive in their new environment. This is a grant funded position and is contingent on the availability of grant funds.

General Description

Our youth mentoring program focuses on leadership, character development, team building, academic success, holistic health and culture consciousness. Mentors serve as the primary programmatic leads working directly with participants during workshops and other enrichment activities. Mentors will lead workshops, design activities and chaperone outings with participants after school and on some weekends.

Mentors will work with SALAM management, partner CBOs, and facilitators to deliver quality, culturally informed and support services. The program will be conducted in accordance with SALAM’s Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws; both are based on the teachings of the Islamic faith.

Duties of the Youth Mentor

  • Design and lead teen enrichment activities
  • Recruit eligible teen participants
  • Motivate and inspire participants to fully engage with the program
  • Conduct individual participant check-ins
  • Register participants and track attendance
  • Communicate with program participants about their progress and needs
  • Coordinate presenters and space usage
  • Refer participants to appropriate support services
  • Compose program reports
  • Report regularly to the Director

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Experience delivering programs to teenagers
  • Fluency in Dari or Farsi
  • A combination of:
    • Associate’s degree or greater in a related field.
    • Two years of performing the duties of a Youth Mentor.
  • Excellent communication skills: the ability to work with participants in person, over the phone, or in writing using English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Availability to work afternoons and evenings two days a week including Fridays and occasional weekends.
  • The candidate must be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience being a youth mentor
  • Experience delivering presentations
  • Experience in program management
  • Fluency in Pashto

Salary and Benefits

Term: This is an hourly position, grant-funded, and can be terminated any time with or without cause.

$25 – $30 Per hour. This is a contract position and is not eligible for SALAM benefits.
